Netherlands did not improve its chances at
qualifying for UEFA Euro 2016 Thursday, and new
captain Arjen Robben is singling out one of his
teammates for doing something “stupid.”
Porto centerback Bruno Martins Indi clashed with
striker Kolbeinn Sighthorsson in the 33rd minute
and was subsequently shown his marching orders,
leaving Holland down to 10 men with a little less
than an hour to play.
Gylfi Sigurdsson would eventually score from the
penalty spot for Iceland in the second half to defeat
the Dutch for the second time in qualification for
Euro 2016.
“As captain, I am someone who protects his players,
but here I can do nothing else than to say that it is
stupid,” Robben told Dutch brodcaster NOS of his
disappointment with Martins Indi. “He let his team
down and I find that very, very bad.”
Robben suffered a groin injury in the 25th minute
and will miss Netherlands’ second September
qualifying match Sunday against Turkey.
